David says 'I like to think of metal as an organic thing, much like a woodcarver would regard a piece of wood. That way the natural element of a crafted piece will always show beneath the design.'

The style of my work can perhaps be described as organic. Rather than work from precise drawings or plans, I set off with an idea in my head and work with the metal letting the thought process merge with the attributes of the hot metal as the work progresses. I also like to see evidence of the crafting in the finished piece rather than have it so perfect that it looks machine made. (That does not mean however that I do not greatly admire those who can produce such hand made perfection!)

Malham Smithy - View our Gallery

The objects created in Malham Smithy are handcrafted, often from one piece of metal, using traditional methods. Unlike mass produced or factory made goods, each piece is unique and will vary slightly such is the nature of working hot metal. Normally items are finished with a black wax coating, but for use outdoors a rust inhibiting paint is used. Sometimes a piece lends itself to being buffed and then lacquer or beeswax is used to protect the finish.

Please scroll through the gallery to see examples of work produced. Some of the smaller popular pieces are often available off the shelf (we like to replace these items as soon as they are sold). Others are bespoke items made to order and can be varied. If you have an idea why not discuss it and let us turn it into a lasting reality.

Where possible we have shown indications of price, although unique items made to order would be subject to quote.

For your convenience we can accept all major credit and debit cards and can also arrange carriage if required.
